Outdoor SamplesOutdoor advertising can be an effective means of promoting your business to a local audience or for luring visitors off the road to your business. Billboards come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but two common sizes are the 12’x24’ poster and the 14’x48’ bulletin. Most billboards are now digitally printed, either on paper panels or on vinyl wraps. Paper panels are generally used when one design is to be used at the same time in multiple locations. Vinyls are generally used for a single location. Billboards may be illuminated for readability during evening hours which is preferable, particularly in winter months when key drive times are dark.

The costs associated with outdoor advertising are the cost of design, production and rental. For a single billboard, average design cost at W.A. Fisher is around $500, the vinyl wrap from $500 to $750 depending on the vendor, and the rental from $450 to $600/month in our market. On an interstate in a major city, the rental cost could be anywhere from $5-10,000 per month. The rental cost is generally determined by the size of the board and the traffic count on the road where the billboard is located.

The golden rule for effective billboard design: keep it simple! Remember that drivers only have a few seconds to see, read, interpret and understand your billboard on the highway. Use simple graphics, plenty of contrast between text and background, and TRY to limit text to five words or less of copy! Clients are always asking us to add phone numbers, Web addresses and directions to their billboards. OK, but understand that virtually nobody is going to be able to read, let alone retain, that information.

W.A. Fisher Marketing can help you find and rate desirable billboard locations and design a single board or outdoor campaign that will be effective.
